K-Polo Art, is the name of the team made up of 5 students from the Espíritu Santo University that made it to the top five finalists in ActInSpace international Hackathon in its 2022 edition. 

ActInSpace is an international innovation competition promoted by the French Space Agency that started five years ago. This competition brings together students, entrepreneurs, professionals and creatives from all five continents to imagine and design innovative products and services for daily use in space. Moreover, the ActInSpace international Hackathon provides a platform for students to showcase their talents, develop new skills, and contribute to the development of innovative products and services. The event is an excellent opportunity for students to gain international exposure, network with peers and professionals from different backgrounds, and work on projects that have the potential to impact society positively.

The 2022 edition started with local qualifiers in November 2022 in Guayaquil on the UEES campus. Six teams worked for 24 hours on their proposals and presented them to a jury of experts in the areas of innovation, technology and entrepreneurship. K-Polo Art’s proposal, Be green, is an app aimed at promoting environmental conservation using playful and gamified mechanisms. This proposal won first place in the qualifying rounds, earning the team a spot in the grand finale. The UEES winning team presented their idea alongside 15 other teams from around the world, in Cannes, France.

The grand finale took place on February 14, 2023, at the Cannes Palace of Festivals and Conferences. After the round of exhibitions, and the jury’s assessment, K-Polo Art was announced as one of the five finalists, along with teams from Azerbaijan, Latvia, Italy and Slovakia. One of the strengths of K-Polo Art team was the multidisciplinary nature of its members, who combined their expertise and skills from computer engineering and architecture majors to develop their innovative idea.

Espíritu Santo University promotes events that foster the students’ creative spirit, recognizing that the multidisciplinary component is essential for developing great ideas that could be implemented in the near future. Overall, participating in the ActInSpace international Hackathon provided students with invaluable experiences and skills. Students’ international exposure constitutes a differentiating factor that will enhance their personal and professional skills, as well as their ability to work effectively in diverse teams.
