Throughout history, it has been demonstrated how Education for Peace and reconciliation programs have transformed societies previously fragmented by violence, leading them toward a path of development and prosperity. Peace and harmony are essential for building a stable society and are necessary for the survival and development of humanity. For this reason, we must highlight the importance of Education for Peace programs.

Freedom is one of the foundational principles of UEES, and within this context, various activities are framed to promote a culture of harmony and peace, such as the outstanding participation of the School of Arts in the IV Orar cantando 2023 festival. An event where music and art come together to inspire a message of peace. UEES performed John Leavitt’s Kyrie de la Missa Festiva, accompanied on the piano by the student of Musical Arts, Juan Sebastián Pincay. The festival featured choirs from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Uganda, India, Italy, Venezuela, and Germany, among other countries. The UEES Choir was founded in 2009 and is composed of students and alumni. It has participated in festivals such as “Ecuador: Let’s sing together”; “Choral Singing to unite people”; Choir Festival at TEC Monterrey; Choir Gathering at Universidad de Carabobo in Venezuela, and UnP Choir Festival in Brazil.

Additionally, on July 12-13, Isidro Fierro, Dean of the School of International Studies, presented the topic “Education for Peace from the Latin American Perspective: the role of the University in Peace and Conflict” at the “Education for Peace in an Era of Crisis” conference in Kigali, Rwanda. This event aimed to share experiences and learn about strategies for education programs for peace.

A peace-centered education helps develop social and moral values, skills, behavior and most importantly to spread peace in surroundings. Peace education declines the evil thinking of conflict, war, and violence. Throughout history we have seen how via Peace Education and a serious reconciliation program, once broken societies are now examples of economic and social miracles. Peace and harmony can bring a peaceful and stable order to society, and they are a necessary condition for the survival and development of mankind. One successful example is the Rwanda Peace Education Program which promotes social cohesion, positive values – including pluralism and personal responsibility – empathy, critical thinking, and action to build a more peaceful society. Once a broken country due to genocide back in 1994, now Rwanda is a role model of security, economic freedom, and sustainability. Rwanda is the most innovative economy among low-income countries. According to the latest Global innovation index, the eastern African nation ranks first in its income group before Madagascar and Ethiopia and sits in the 9th spot of the sub-Saharan African group.

Education for peace is a fundamental pillar in building a more peaceful and prosperous future for humanity, and UEES seeks to strengthen values and promote harmony to contribute to the development of a fair and equitable society for all.
