A project that promotes play, physical activity and inclusive learning.

Students and teachers from the Faculty of Architecture and Design of UEES carried out the architectural and landscape redesign of the schoolyard of the Diez de Septiembre School. The project, which took place between August 28 and December 17, 2024, sought to transform the playground into an inclusive space for learning, where children can play, move and interact with each other.

The initiative arose in response to the need to improve school spaces to promote physical activity and the integral development of students. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity for children and adolescents, but many do not meet this figure due to a lack of adequate spaces. The redesign of the schoolyard sought to create an attractive and functional environment that encourages children to play and move, contributing to their physical, mental and cognitive health.

The project seeks to build sustainable communities. The main beneficiaries of the project are the 40 children and 2 teachers of the Diez de Septiembre School, who now have a revitalized schoolyard that offers more opportunities for play, movement, and various educational activities. In addition, the project had a positive impact on the community, as it strengthened the sense of belonging thanks to the participation of parents and local residents at different stages of the process.

The redesign of the schoolyard not only transformed the physical space, but also allowed the educational community to acquire skills during the implementation of the project.. Students acquired practical skills in participatory design and execution of architectural proposals, while teachers put into practice their academic management skills and promoted meaningful practice-based learning. The transformation of the schoolyard at the Diez de Septiembre School is an example of how architecture and design can contribute to improving people's quality of life.
