The Universidad Espíritu Santo (UEES) in alliance with the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL) and the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE) at the Ibarra campus, presented in Quito and Guayaquil the results of the study Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM 2024) Ecuador Chapter . This collaboration allowed for detailed knowledge of the state of entrepreneurship at the national level, providing the strategic information necessary for decision making and strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor is the largest study to measure the level of entrepreneurship worldwide, and the identification of factors that determine the level of entrepreneurial activity.
Main findings:
Ecuador maintains a high and sustained rate of early entrepreneurship. This means that a large proportion of the population is involved in the creation of new businesses, a situation that exceeds even the regional average. In addition, a 83% of Ecuadorian entrepreneurs considers having the necessary skills to start a business, a positive sign that reinforces the confidence and capacity of national talent.
Challenges of the sector:
Fear of failure has increased and continues to be a significant obstacle for those who wish to become entrepreneurs. In addition, economic necessity continues to be the main motivation for starting a business, which reflects an opportunity to strengthen policies that promote entrepreneurship through opportunity and innovation.
Use of emerging technologies:
More and more Ecuadorian entrepreneurs are incorporating digital tools to improve their products, optimize processes and increase revenues. However, challenges associated with the use of these technologies are also identified, such as data security and ethical implications in decision making.
Entrepreneurship Forum:
In addition to the presentation of the report, the Forum on Entrepreneurship Promotion was held in Guayaquil, moderated by Pablo Arosemena Marriott, general director of the Eureka Entrepreneurship Center. The panel was made up of prominent leaders in the sector, including Patricia Moreira Muñoz, president of the Chamber of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises of Guayas (CAPIG); Juan José Yúñez Nowak, mayor of Samborondón; and Angelo Caputi Oyague, president of the Board of Directors of Banco Guayaquil.
In this way, the academy provides the necessary spaces to generate strategic knowledge about entrepreneurship in the country, facilitating a rigorous analysis of its evolution, identifying strengths and challenges, and promoting dialogue between key players in the ecosystem. By presenting the results of GEM 2024, the participating universities not only promote an informed entrepreneurial culture, but also encourage the articulation of public and private policies that promote innovative, sustainable initiatives based on the use of emerging technologies.
