20 years of Dollarization

This Thursday, January 9, at the Gran Salón Regente of the Universidad Espiritu Santo, the event «20 years of dollarization».» organized by the Inter-American Business Federation, where the exchange rate was analyzed with its strengths and weaknesses by several authorities and experts.

The president of the FIE, Joyce de Ginatta, recounted the event between 1999 and 2000. She said she heard an interview with former President Jamil Mahuad, who announced dollarization, that the decision was entirely his. However, she claims that the decision was 80 % hers.

Juan José Yúnez, Mayor of Samborondón, inaugurated the event called «20 years of dollarization» and was the first to mention the pros and cons. The event was attended by the Vice President of the Republic, Otto Sonnenholzner, who stated that having dollarized the country was the smartest decision and added:

«In politics you have to start doing what is right over what is popular.».

The former mayor of Guayaquil, Jaime Nebot and former president Gustavo Noboa were also present.

Also participating were authorities from Espiritu Santo University, such as: Dr. Carlos Ortega Maldonado, chancellor; Dr. Joaquín Hernández Alvarado, rector; Alberto Dahik, Francisco Swett, General Director of the Graduate School and E. Francisco Swett, Dean of the Graduate School. School of Entrepreneurship, Business and Economics.

Several conferences were held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on various topics such as constitutional guarantees and the rule of law as an element of economic development, with the participation of Alberto Dahik, Fidel Márquez, ProRector of the Universidad de la Plata, and Fidel Márquez, President of the University of Chile. Ecotec Technological University; and Hernán Pérez Loose, columnist of El Universo Newspaper.
