UEES - Espiritu Santo University > CESDE > UEES held forum on Money Laundering Prevention

The Universidad Espiritu Santo (UEES), in conjunction with the Superintendency of Banks and the Association of Private Banks of Ecuador (Asobanca), organized the Money Laundering Prevention Forum, an event that brought together experts in regulatory compliance and financial risk control. During the event, the main challenges and advances in the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism in the country were discussed.

The panel of experts consisted of Roberto Romero von Buchwald, Superintendent of Banks; Alan Sierra, former director of the Financial and Economic Analysis Unit (UAFE) and professor at UEES; Diana Guerrero, specialist in money laundering regulations; Marco Antonio Rodríguez, Asobanca's Executive President; and Andrés Jiménez, consultant to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on the prevention of money laundering and the financing of terrorism (AML/FT).

Alberto Dahik, Director of Graduate Studies at UEES, emphasized at the opening of the event the importance of these spaces for debate: “The key is to take advantage of a high-level forum like this one to identify the mechanisms that allow the execution of what is established in the law. In addition, it is the responsibility of the private sector, which provides these contributions, to exert the necessary pressure so that the resources are allocated correctly”.

Marco Rodríguez, executive president of Asobanca, highlighted the importance of regulatory control: “In this meeting we discussed the accompaniment, supervision and control that the Superintendency of Banks provides through its technical knowledge and timely support to ensure that controls are more effective every day”.

Roberto Romero von Buchwald, Superintendent of Banks, stressed the importance of academia in the fight against money laundering: “These forums are essential to bring academia closer to the implementation of strategies to combat money laundering. The academy can nurture us with new methodologies that, when implemented in practice, will contribute to improve the quality of life of Ecuadorians”.

The event reaffirmed the commitment of UEES to the training of highly qualified professionals in the financial and regulatory area, promoting spaces for dialogue that strengthen cooperation between academia, the public sector and private enterprise in the fight against financial crime.
