The “Grow with Phoenix” project was the winner in the Food Safety category.
Espiritu Santo University (UEES) won first place internationally in the SpaceHACK for Sustainability, a hackathon organized by the Interplanetary Initiative at Arizona State University (ASU). The event challenges students from around the world to develop innovative solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), using satellite data as a key tool.
The UEES team triumphed with the project. “Grow with Phoenix”, focused on food security, standing out among participants from five countries that, during the course of the year, had more than 15 hours, worked intensively on three major challenges. The hackathon was held simultaneously March 21 and 22 in several educational institutions globally, bringing together 50 students distributed in 10 multidisciplinary teams.
Satellite technology played a key role, enabling the teams to analyze phenomena such as heat distribution, water flow, reforestation and watershed management. This information, interpreted from a scientific and sustainable perspective, made it possible to propose innovative and viable solutions.
Prior to the presentation of their proposals, participants had access to specialized workshops and mentoring sessions with international aerospace and sustainability experts.
In addition to the international first place, the UEES team also won other awards:
-
The Inti Project - International Honorable Mention
-
DigitFarm - First place at the local level
“This has been my first international hackathon experience, and it has been amazing to be able to share and learn alongside universities from all over the world,” expressed Milena Rodriguez, Online Marketing student at UEES.
Once again, Espiritu Santo University reaffirms its commitment to innovation, active learning and the formation of young leaders prepared to face the global challenges of the future. Likewise, this Hackathon reinforces international relations with renowned universities such as the University of Toronto (Canada), Cergy Paris Université (France), Arizona State University (United States) and the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez.
