Stunningly realistic mannequins, state-of-the-art software and modern learning techniques aim to take simulation culture to another level.
Samborondón, February 28, 2024. In an ambitious step towards excellence in medical education, Espiritu Santo University (UEES) presents SIMUEES, the largest and most advanced simulation clinic in the region that redefines the standards of medical education. This learning center offers medical students a realistic, hands-on environment that will confront them with high-fidelity simulated clinical situations.
Juan Carlos Zevallos, Dean of the School of Health Sciences, stresses the importance of learning through authentic experiences. «We have selected the most modern equipment worldwide, from mannequins to software and training programs, to offer an educational environment that accurately reflects real medical situations,» emphasizes the authority.
SIMUEES has 17 high-specialty areas ranging from medical emergencies to complex surgical interventions. Disciplines such as cardiology, pneumology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, urology, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, laparoscopic surgery and others are duly represented in this innovative space.
“The students will practice with exceptionally realistic medical mannequins that have a level of detail that makes them virtually indistinguishable from a human,” said José Luis Piedra, a medical student.
Classroom sessions will be recorded with high technology and replicated in Debriefing rooms, using modern learning techniques such as inverted classroom, training based on team discussions, repetition and spacing.
Zevallos highlights the importance of evaluation as a key component, as both instructors and classmates will be able to make observations on performance during the scenarios. This analysis will cover not only technical competencies, but also soft skills, such as bedside manner.
SIMUEES is positioned as a leading simulation education and training center and will contribute to society by collaborating with local hospitals and health centers for training and continuing education programs. Its first objective will be to work with UEESCLINIC for training and education of its collaborators.
Espiritu Santo University reaffirms its commitment to educational excellence and innovation in the field of medicine through SIMUEES. This is one of several projects to be inaugurated by the institution on the occasion of its thirtieth anniversary.
