The Universidad Espiritu Santo (UEES) in partnership with El Universo Newspaper, held the Conversatorio «Governance Challenges in Ecuador».», The event is a space for analysis and debate on the challenges facing the country in the area of political decisions and governance.
The event was attended by experts in law and politics who shared their perspectives and experiences to offer a diagnosis of the current situation and generate proposals that can contribute to the institutional strengthening of the country.
The speakers were: Hernán Pérez Loose, former ambassador to the United Nations (UN); Nathaly Arias, former legislator and professor of Political Science at UEES, and Roberto Lopez, a lawyer specializing in constitutional law.
Perez pointed out that in the United States the system for designating authorities is viable because there is a two-party system and not a dispersion of political organizations, as in Ecuador, and that one way to improve governance would be to have a second round to elect legislators and eliminate the figure of the alternate assemblyman.
For his part, Arias pointed out that the recent reforms to the Constitution open the debate as to whether the objective of a Magna Carta is understood, if it is used by each administration for its own interests.
Meanwhile, Lopez addressed the idea of having a bicameral legislative system and pointed out that, although this was raised in the Assembly at the time, it was not processed and shows that the Parliament does not process or process these reforms that could be key for governance.
This event is part of the initiatives of the University Think Tank, a center of analysis and reflection dedicated to study and pronounce on issues that impact Ecuadorian society.
In this way, the University promotes constructive academic dialogue on crucial issues affecting the country, contributing to the strengthening of democracy through the exchange of ideas and proposals.
