This course introduces the cost estimating process for construction projects. Starting from a general estimate of conceptual design to more detailed design phase. The course will cover quantity take offs, cost estimating of labor, materials, and equipment, and unit prices calculations. In addition, the course covers the cost control methods and cost management for construction projects. Students will work in a real-life construction project to calculate the total cost of the project and schedule required to build it.

UAQC470 Design and Construction of Residences (3)

Comprehensive residential building and site design. The studio will have a 2 in 1 project. Students will work in groups to develop a masterplan from which they will choose a lot to develop a multifamily residential building. Topics include human, environmental, cultural, and technological factors. The first part of the semester will emphasize pre-design skills like precedent research, programming, and site analysis. In the second part of the semester, the students will develop the design of the masterplan and the residential building, which will bring into focus issues of structural systems, environmental systems, building service systems, and building envelope systems at various scales of building design.

UURB0350 Urbanism II (3)

It is necessary to provide students with basic knowledge of the urban design process methodology, understanding architecture from its interrelation with the city and society. This process is supported by two approaches, one theoretical conceptual of the urban form and the other practical, relating urban design with urban architecture.

The Portfolio course teaches various tools that graphic designer can use to position himself and become known in the industry in a clear and strong way. The student will learn how to organize and refine projects to include them in a design portfolio and identify the requirements of the current industry, with the intention of demonstrating their skills.

The sports industry is one of the most important industries in the world. This course offers a conceptual introduction to fake news and post truth understanding the dynamics of journalism from a global perspective. The term fake news became in a new way to lie and spread information with a standard does not deserve the label of news, including misinformation and disinformation. Our goal is to contextualize these issues and try to understand the limits, possibilities and solutions in order to get the ideal of journalism.

UDER318 Antitrust Law (2 credits)

The course will cover the doctrinal basis of Antitrust law, analyzing its underlying principles and economic background. Cases and resolutions from different Antitrust authorities will be analyzed in order to understand topics of the class. Topics include: (i) Constitutional basis and principles; (ii) market power and business volume; (iii) abuse of market power; and (iv) vertical/horizontal agreements and restrictive practices; (v) economic concentrations; (vi) unfair competition; (vii) corrective measures and sanctions.

UPRO0301 International Treaties Law (2 credits)

The law of international treaties is extremely important because in the hierarchy of our legislation, these agreements are at the top of our pyramid (only after the Constitution). Likewise, it must be emphasized that international agreements mainly regulate supra-governmental interactions but many times, the acceptance and ratification of these treaties mean a modification in the internal laws of the subscribing states. This is the Ecuadorian case as expressed above, and that of most of the states that are part of the United Nations and different international organizations.  Traditionally it was considered that Public International Law was applicable mainly to regulate international relations between States and to settle disputes that may arise between them. However, facing the emergence of new subjects in the international community, International Law has been specialized to attend those new challenges, which is how from Public International Law arises International law, International Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law, Diplomatic and Consular Law, among others. Also, the study of the Law of International Treaties allows us to understand in a better way what are the new topics that concerns the entire world and how they will be managed by the international community.

UPRO0400 Alternative Methods and Commercial Arbitration (2 credits)

Alternative dispute resolution methods are employed worldwide, as well as in Ecuador, in order to provide parties to a conflict with tools better suited to find an end to conflict. They are essential to the correct functioning of Law as a whole, and this course intends to explore them and provide students with a firm grasp of their intricacies.

This course will allow students to understand how individuals make decisions and interact with the market. In the 21st century, our world has become more interconnected than ever before. Globalization has eroded the traditional territorial boundaries between states. This course will focus in the key concepts of diplomacy and the institutional development of diplomatic relations. It will address the knowledge of negotiations processes. Special attention will be paid to the modern origins of diplomacy as well as the shift from the exclusive operation of state centered diplomacy and initiative to the more modern application of multiple actors, issues, and levels. The course provides an overview of international negotiation theories and practices of international importance – bilateral, regional and multilateral. The emphasis is on different approaches to understanding what drives negotiation process and explains the outcome. Negotiations of international significance are today conducted not only between individual states, but also within and beyond them. The general goal of the course is to provide students with an overview of skills needed to engage in negotiations, at both the domestic and international level. The course guides the students through debates within the field of international negotiation and mediation and introduces them to the challenges of practical aspects of negotiation through in-class simulations.

This course will not only provide tools to critically analyze international conflict, but will also engage them in forecasting negotiation challenges, developing negotiation strategies, and executing them in simulating bargaining settings.

ULAT395 Contexto social y comunicación en Latinoamérica (3)

El curso  brinda a los estudiantes internacionales  las herramientas  de  comunicación de en los diferentes ámbitos  y contextos sociolingüísticos del Ecuador e Hispanoamérica. El primer capítulo, Ecuador: Lenguaje y Sociedad tiene un enfoque sociolingüístico y busca la reflexión sobre el  lenguaje, la sociedad y la comunicación en el Ecuador, atendiendo a los aspectos fonéticos, morfosintácticos, las variaciones léxicas regionales y expresiones idiomáticas coloquiales y de jerga. El segundo capítulo, El español de América,  aborda, en el ámbito de la sociolingüística, las particularidades fonéticas, semánticas y morfosintácticas  del  español de América.  Finalmente, el tercer capítulo, Fisonomía del español en Hispanoamérica analiza una visión integradora de todos los aspectos relativos a la comunicación desde diferentes contextos: literatura, arte y la historia.

El curso comprende una selección de lecturas representativas de la literatura ecuatoriana, en particular, y de la literatura iberoamericana, en general, que abordan diferentes aspectos de la cultura, ideología y problemática hispanoamericana. Se tratarán temas como las migraciones, su impacto económico, social y cultural; se repasará la historia y la ideología de Hispanoamérica del siglo XX: los eventos y los protagonistas de los procesos revolucionarios; se abordarán las historias cotidianas, las costumbres y la tradición, la lucha por la supervivencia del hombre medio; finalmente revisaremos algunos de los problemas sociales que aquejan a Hispanoamérica.
