On Wednesday afternoon, September 15, in the Aula Magna of the Universidad Espiritu Santo, an environmental study was presented to address the aphid, a pest that has affected trees and plants in Samborondon, Guayaquil and other sectors.
The activity was attended by the Mayor of Samborondón Juan José Yúnez; Eliana Molina, UEES Academic Vice Rector; René Rodriguez, Director of the UEES Environmental Sciences Career and officials from the Municipal Environmental Management Department.
The canton of Samborondón is leading an action plan based on a technical investigation to proceed with the elimination of the pest in an environmentally responsible manner.
The presence of pests (cottony scales) affects green areas in Samborondón, Guayaquil, Daule and Durán. Since July 2021, a technical committee was created to develop research on aphid management and prevention in order to evaluate its impact and propose strategies.
This was done in conjunction with entities such as the Ministry of the Environment, Espíritu Santo University, Agrocalidad, EcoSambito Cía. Ltda., the Ecuadorian Entomological Society, and the Guayas College of Agricultural Engineers.
The preparation and implementation of an ordinance framed in the Organic Law of Agricultural Health was formulated by the municipality. Within the plan, it was decided to prohibit the use of pesticides in green areas. In addition, a protocol was established for pest management in these areas.
In addition, the collection and transportation of pruning waste from infected trees and shrubs in bags or sacks was proposed. This action will prevent the spread of pests within the canton.
