Students collected 3,156 cans to assemble “Roots of Kindness” sculpture.
Under the slogan “Sowing love”, the CANStruction campaign was carried out, an initiative aimed at the prevention and eradication of child malnutrition. Organized by the Diakonía Food Bank and the Mayor's Office of Samborondón, this inter-school and inter-university contest was aimed at creating sculptures with food cans, which were exhibited in the Bicentennial Park and later donated to the Diakonía Bank.
Universidad Espíritu Santo (UEES) stood out at the event, winning first place in the categories of most kilos donated, most likes on social networks, most cans donated and best sculpture. Its structure, entitled “Roots of Kindness”, was built with 3,156 cans, reflecting not only its creativity, but also its strong commitment to solidarity.
“Being part of these projects is satisfying because we can see that with a small action we can make big changes,” said Barbara Vazquez, a student.
The competition had the participation of 7 schools and 6 universities, surpassing the initial goal of 35 thousand tons of food donated and reaching a total of 54 thousand tons. This shows that love and solidarity can materialize in works of art with a great social impact.
The mayor of Samborondón, Juan José Yúnez, highlighted the importance of solidarity in initiatives such as Canstruction: “The importance of solidarity in initiatives such as Canstruction lies not only in their social impact, but also in their ability to transform and improve the society in which we live”.”
This event underscored the EUESU's commitment to food security and nutrition, moving towards a more equitable and hunger-free future, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: Zero Hunger.
