UEES - Espiritu Santo University > News > Current status of Covid-19 in Guayaquil
On Friday, July 3, 2020, at the Foundational Hall of the Espiritu Santo University, a group of specialists from several hospitals in Guayaquil, dismissed rumors of a Covid-19 outbreak in the city.

Washington Alemán, UEES professor, infectologist and director of Guayaquil's technical committee, stated that the stability achieved with much sacrifice by this city does not authorize it to enter a green traffic light.

“We have to be clear that we cannot relax and want to think that SARS-CoV2 is controlled or defeated. We have to fully implement the measures, educate and continue to maintain this stability.”,

said Alemán at the beginning of the meeting.

José Vergara, head of Intensive Care at Guasmo Sur hospital, said that serious patients also arrive with their families from other cities. These patients present mild symptoms and are attended in outpatient clinics and this adds to the reports of cases in the city. He indicated that in this hospital there are 35 intensive care beds, 17 beds occupied.

Representatives of Luis Vernaza Hospital, Teodoro Maldonado Carbo Hospital, Guasmo Hospital, assured that there are beds available. While in Los Ceibos hospital in the Intensive Care area there are 41 beds that remain occupied because they arrive daily from other provinces, including the Sierra. And in the Emergency area there are 25 beds, but there are only 7 patients, said Alberto Sper, head of Intensive Care at that hospital.

Experts called for caution and responsibility to avoid another tragedy.
