The article entitled “Sarcopenia risk: a warning sign for cognitive impairment in postmenopause?”, which presents the results of a study developed by the Latin American Network for Climacteric Research, a network in which Peter Chedraui, UEES research professor, is a member and active collaborator, has been recognized with the Editor's Choice award from the scientific journal Maturitas in its March 2025 edition. This award highlights research of high quality and international relevance, highlighting the significant impact of this study in the field of women's health.

The research was based on a multinational sample of 772 postmenopausal women from nine Latin American countries, and explored the relationship between sarcopenia - the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength associated with age - and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The results revealed that women at risk of sarcopenia, assessed with the SARC-F tool, were three times more likely to have MCI, even after accounting for other factors. This finding suggests that the SARC-F, originally designed to detect physical frailty, could be used as an accessible method for early identification of cognitive vulnerabilities.

UEES, through the leadership of Chedraui and the collaboration with researchers from various Latin American countries, demonstrates its commitment to high-level scientific production. This recognition not only boosts the academic prestige of the university, but also positions UEES as a regional reference in health, contributing to the advancement of knowledge and the generation of preventive strategies that improve the quality of life of the female population.
