Dr. Antonio R. Gómez García's work is closely related to Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12), which promotes sustainable consumption and production patterns. In his studies, Dr. Gómez highlights the alarming increase in occupational diseases and injuries, which have grown by 26% globally in just four years (2015-2019). This increase is related to unsustainable work practices, such as exposure to toxic materials and excessive working hours, which not only affect the health of workers, but also generate high social and economic costs.
In Latin America, and particularly in Ecuador, these adverse working conditions underscore the need for more responsible management in the production and consumption of resources. Dr. Gómez emphasizes that, in order to design effective occupational health programs aligned with SDG 12, it is essential to have solid scientific evidence, obtained from high quality databases such as PubMed, Scopus and the Cochrane Library. These resources enable the development of informed interventions that promote safer and more sustainable work practices, positively impacting the quality of life of workers and promoting work environments that respect both human health and environmental sustainability.
By applying an evidence-based approach, Dr. Gómez's work contributes to companies adopting more responsible practices in production, aligning with SDG 12 to create safe and sustainable work environments, benefiting both workers and society at large.
