UEES - Espiritu Santo University > Research Center > Ecuadorian mangroves reach metaverse

The Universidad Espíritu Santo (UEES) presented a pioneering initiative in the region that takes the Ecuadorian mangroves to the metaverse, an innovative proposal whose main objective is to promote the visibility and dissemination of the restoration program of these valuable ecosystems.

The project offers a immersive experience for users to explore and learn in depth about Ecuador's mangroves, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Through an interactive illustrated guide, users will be able to learn about the 560 hectares of mangrove forests already restored, discover the techniques used in their recovery and appreciate the rich biodiversity that inhabits these spaces.

“The mangrove in the metaverse is a conservation strategy for this vital ecosystem with a futuristic vision based on the challenges of the current reality,” said professor and researcher Natalia Molina.

This approach not only facilitates access to the environmental education, but also provides a platform for research on the ecological importance of mangroves. In addition, it acts as a valuable tool for students, academics, scientists and decision makers, both locally and internationally.

Lucas Morgavi, creator of virtual reality experiences, pointed out that there is research that may be too technical for the younger generations, so they need an approach more investable and audiovisual and that is where the metaverse which can be accessed from devices such as cell phones, computers, virtual reality glasses, among others.

«We are facing a technological race that can really change the way we connect to the Internet. And it is very important to be able to enter this race first, especially from the academic side of the universities,» said Morgavi.

With this innovative proposal, UEES seeks to break down the physical barriers that limit knowledge and research on mangroves, allowing people from all over the world to explore these ecosystems from a distance. This breakthrough highlights the relevance of continuing mangrove restoration and conservation efforts, reaffirming their preservation as a fundamental priority for future generations.
