The new, new world of Julio María Sanguinetti, former president of Uruguay

UEES - Espiritu Santo University > Law > The new, new world of Julio María Sanguinetti, former president of Uruguay

The Universidad Espiritu Santo (UEES), through the School of Law, Politics and Development and the School of Government, welcomed Julio María Sanguinetti, twice President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, in a keynote speech entitled “The new, new world: reflections on democracy in an uncertain world.”.

Recognized for his historic role in Uruguay's democratic consolidation and for his outstanding career as a lawyer, journalist, author and international lecturer, President Sanguinetti has been one of the most influential voices in Latin American politics and thought for more than five decades. His visit to Ecuador was part of an international agenda aimed at promoting dialogue on the challenges facing democracies in Latin America and the world today.

During his speech, he addressed crucial issues such as the transformation of democratic systems in the digital era, the impact of political and social polarization, the challenges of governance in the face of the crisis of institutional trust and the role of Latin America in the new global order.

“In large countries there has been an increase in blank votes and abstentions that simply remain a protest, and that is very bad. Political life is not exhausted in a protest; political life is exhausted in always defending those ideals of freedom and democracy, which is the system that has given more prosperity to the world and has taken more people out of poverty,” Sanguinetti pointed out.

The conference generated a space for reflection on civic responsibility and commitment to democratic values, especially in a global context marked by more interconnected, demanding and diverse societies.
