The fundamental purpose of the Neurosurgery Specialty is to train highly competent specialists in neurosurgical diagnosis and treatment, ensuring excellence in the provision of medical services and promoting the welfare of patients. Consequently, it seeks to actively contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the field of surgical pathologies of the central and peripheral nervous system and the development of new therapeutic strategies, through the instruction of professionals committed to research and innovation in the field of Neurosurgery.

Aimed at

Professionals with a third level terminal degree in the area of medicine, granted by a National or Foreign University, recognized in the list of Senescyt, who have completed their time of rural medicine (nationals).

Once the academic, assistance and administrative requirements have been passed, the degree of "Licenciado de  Neurosurgery Specialist

At the end of his training as a specialist in Neurosurgery:

  • The graduate of the Neurosurgery Program will be a highly trained professional, endowed with a broad set of competencies and skills specifically designed to excel in the complex and demanding practice of Neurosurgery, therefore, will develop a deep and comprehensive knowledge of the nervous system in all its dimensions, from detailed anatomy to physiology and the various pathologies that may affect it. This comprehensive knowledge will not only allow you to thoroughly understand the structure and function of the nervous system, but will also be fundamental to make accurate diagnoses and develop effective treatment plans for a wide variety of neurosurgical conditions, such as brain tumors, congenital malformations, cranioencephalic trauma and cerebral vascular diseases, among others. 
  • Likewise, you will be fully trained in advanced surgical techniques specifically designed for the treatment of nervous system disorders, including complex procedures such as spine surgery, cerebral endovascular surgery and skull base surgery, among others. Your training will include internships and intensive training in the operating room, where you will acquire practical experience in the management of complex and challenging situations, such as the resection of intracranial tumors close to vital structures and the repair of cerebral arteriovenous malformations, in order to perfect your surgical skills, as well as to learn to make timely and accurate decisions at critical moments. 
  • Future neurosurgeons will develop effective communication with patients and their families, as well as with other colleagues in the health care setting, thus, this clear and empathic communication skill will be fundamental to establish solid relationships with patients and their families, which in turn will foster care focused on the individual needs of each patient. In addition, they will contribute to the advancement of neurosurgery through scientific research, therefore, they will be in the ability to design and conduct clinical and experimental studies, as well as critically analyze scientific evidence to apply it in their clinical practice. They will be committed to the promotion of neurological health and the wellbeing of the community. They will also promote a focus on rights, equality and interculturalism in professional training, through respect for patient diversity and the promotion of equity in access to neurosurgical care will be fundamental in their daily practice.

The following positions are available for this postgraduate program, as requested by the hospitals:

The assignment of the Base Hospital will be made according to the score obtained by the winners; that is, the applicant who obtains the highest score will decide in which hospital he/she wishes to perform his/her medical specialty, and so on with the other winners.

Requirements

Requirements to participate in the contest

  • The applicant may apply for only one clinical or surgical specialty.
  • Those physicians who are currently pursuing a medical specialty program at our institution will not be able to apply to this process.
  • The applicant must upload all the supporting and merit documentation scanned in PDF format.
  • All documents must be notarized copies.

Documents that support the suitability of the applicants (in case of not uploading the complete documentation, the applicant will not be allowed to continue with the competition process).

  • Color copy of updated Identity Card.
  • Copy of identity card or passport (for foreigners).
  • 1 recent color photograph 
  • Copy of third level degree.
  • Be a professional in the field of specific health knowledge with a third level degree registered in the National System of Higher Education Information, SNIESE / SENESCYT and to the health authority ACESS, or whoever takes its place.
  • Have passed the professional qualification examination of the CACES, if applicable.
  • Certificate of proficiency level of at least A1 in a language other than the mother tongue.
  • Certificate of Rural Medicine.
  • Certificate of final grade (the university reserves the right to calculate the IMG).

Documents for merit qualification, Notarized (30 points)

  • Certificates of medical training courses endorsed by an institution of higher education, with a minimum duration of 40 hours and with evaluation,  Attach the image of the call for the course. (To be scored with 0.5 each, with a maximum of 2 points) 
  • Publications and/or letters of acceptance for publication in indexed journals or books; as principal author or co-author. LATINDEX, MIAR, SCOPUD, SCIELO, MEDLINE, PUBMED, LILACS. (To be scored with 0.5 each, with a maximum of 4 points).
  • Postgraduate studies: doctorate (PhD. or equivalent), specialization and/or master's degree in the area of health registered in the SNIESE/SENESCYT. 2 points will be recognized for PHD, 2 points for Specializations and 1 for Master's Degree.
  • Teaching assistantships, practical or theoretical tutorships in higher education institutions, duly certified by the competent authority, obtained through merit and competitive examinations., during their academic training. Scoring will be 0.5 each period of assistantship, maximum 2 points.
  • Awards for academic merit and/or research, granted by an institution of higher education or one of the country's academic teaching units, during their training. third-level academic. 0.5 will be recognized for each one, maximum of 2 points.
  •  
  • Full and half scholarships academic by national or foreign institutions of higher education or any other entity.. A score of 1 point will be given for each scholarship, maximum 2 points.
  • Duly documented clinical-surgical assistance activity, including work history (Consolidated from the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security or other qualifying documents). In third and second level hospitals. 1 point for each continuous calendar year of activities, up to a maximum of 2 points.
  • Participation in research projects duly endorsed by an institution of higher education, a research institution and/or certificates of lecturer or speaker in endorsed academic meetings. Attach the image of the congress or call for proposals. A score of 1 point will be given for each participation or certificate, up to a maximum of 2 points.
  • Affirmative action certification, according to the technical standard of the regulatory entity in force, issued by the corresponding governmental entity. It will be scored with 0.25 points.

In addition to all the provisions of Resolution RPC-SE-08-No.023-2022, codified, which contains the Rules for the Conduct of Merit and Opposition Competitions to access the Medical Specialty Programs.

Requirements for publications

  • Recognized journals (LATINDEX, MIAR, SCOPUD, SCIELO, MEDLINE, PUBMED, LILACS). Maximum number of participants (5)
  • Publications related to the specialty. In case of books or chapters in collective works, send notarized copy of the book cover (Q1, Q2; Q3; Q4 IMPACT FACTOR) (CLINICAL CASE VALUE WITH A MAXIMUM OF 5 ART. SCORE AND THE LITERATURE REVIEW MUST BE OF HIGH IMPACT.

On the competitive examinations (70 points)

The competitive examination will be conducted through the CTO platform, according to the established schedule.

  • Winner of a merit-based competitive examination.
  • Submit the documents required by the University and UAD.
  • Present certification of affiliation with the Social Security Institute. 
  • To pay the registration fee and the first tuition fee before the beginning of the program.
