The Faculty of Engineering, Environmental Sciences career, of the Universidad de Especialidades Espiritu Santo (UEES) has developed a series of activities in 2023 focused on the protection and conservation of underwater life, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These initiatives, aimed at students, experts and the community in general, highlight the importance of aquatic ecosystems and their preservation.
In June, the faculty organized an event focused on the migration of the golden catfish, an important aquatic biodiversity phenomenon in Ecuador. During the event, the documentary on the ecological connectivity of the Daule River basin was screened, highlighting the interdependence between the river's ecosystems and the Amazon basin. The event was attended by ichthyologist researchers, fishermen and non-governmental organizations working in environmental conservation.
In August, the faculty offered an educational talk focused on water conservation, where the care and responsible use of this vital resource was promoted, highlighting the importance of environmental education from an early age to foster a commitment to sustainability.
September brought with it a successful conversation entitled “Mangrove Ecosystem Restoration: An Integral Path to Sustainability,” in which prominent entities such as DP World Ecuador and Fundación Carbono Azul participated. Participants explored the challenges and benefits of restoring mangroves, a critical ecosystem for biodiversity and climate change mitigation.
In November, the School of Engineering closed the year with the conservatory “The Daule River Basin Pact: Advances and challenges in the protection of water resources», where the achievements and obstacles in the conservation of the region's water resources were discussed.
