UEES Researcher Participates in UN General Assembly Scientific Summit

UEES - Espiritu Santo University > Engineering > UEES Researcher Participates in UN General Assembly Scientific Summit

Ileana Herrera, professor and researcher at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Research Center of Universidad Espíritu Santo (UEES), participated in the forum «Introduced Species and Their Impact in Latin America,» held as part of the UN General Assembly’s Scientific Summit.

The goal of this significant event is to establish global scientific mechanisms and projects that support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda.

During her presentation, Herrera, along with other scientists, highlighted the unique vulnerability of Latin American countries to the threats posed by invasive species. They emphasized that invasive exotic plants (IEP) can have a disproportionate impact on the biodiversity and economies of these countries, which often have fewer resources to manage invasive species and rely more heavily on agriculture, forestry, and fishing compared to more developed nations.

Ileana Herrera’s participation in this international event underscores Universidad Espíritu Santo’s commitment to research and addressing environmental and sustainability challenges facing the Latin American region.
